Housing Information

Finding a convenient and comfortable home in a new city can be intimidating and frustrating. To make your search easier, the housing staff at ELI is happy to help you arrange your accommodation.  We have special agreements with several local apartment complexes that are willing to offer ELI students short term leases and, in some cases, discounts on the monthly rent or the deposit. We have long-standing relationships with nearby apartment complexes that have been very successful in meeting the needs of our students, and provide quality housing with many amenities at a reasonable price. If you are interested in reserving a space before you arrive in Gainesville, contact the Housing Coordinator, Barbara Earp.

  • Attend ELI housing seminar after checking-in where you will be told of the housing options currently available for ELI students. Most students live in an apartment with 2 to 4 bedrooms and they share the living areas and kitchen with their roommates. Some students have private bathrooms and others share depending upon the apartment chosen. Each student has an individual lease for their room. Contracts are available for half and whole semesters. All apartments are furnished, but students must provide their own linens and personal necessities. Sometimes, electricity, cable, and telephone service are included in the rent, it depends upon the apartment complex. Rent costs from $400-500 per month, depending on the amenities.
  • After attending the housing seminar, students visit several apartments with an ELI staff member.
  • After viewing apartments, students sign contracts at the apartment complexes they have chosen. At the time of signing, students are expected to pay a deposit, application fee, service fee, and first and last month's rent. This amount can be paid by travelers' checks, cash, check, and in some limited cases, by credit card. Expect to pay between $1000-1500 when you sign your contract.
  • Students can usually move into their apartment the day after they sign their contract. In some cases, it may be possible to move in on the day you sign your contract. However, it is better to plan on spending a night in a hotel while waiting for your apartment to be ready.
  • An ELI staff member is available to help students shop for apartment necessities during the first several days of check-in. Shopping trips are arranged for the early evening and students are expected to notify the housing staff if they would like to go shopping.
  • Students requiring extra housing assistance because of special needs (family members, pets, etc..) will be referred to a local housing agency. There is no fee for this service.
